The Breakfast of the Birds - Judah Steinberg and Emily Solis-Cohen Jr - 1944 Edition, 4th Impression
These tales from the Hebrew, enjoyed by an ever-widening circle of children have justified their translation and proved their universal appeal... (from the Forward)
{HISTORY}
A collection of children's stories written in Hebrew by Judah Steinberg (1863-1908), a Romanian writer of the Jewish faith, The Breakfast of the Birds was translated and published in 1917 by prize-winning American author, poet and Jewish humanitarian Emily Solis-Cohen (1886-1966). This collection contains 18 fanciful and allegorical stories and fables written for children in mind but also meant to be enjoyed by adults too.
Both Emily and Judah had aspirations to entertain young minds with their writing. Judah hoped to encourage children to learn more about their religion and the Hebrew language. Emily wanted to encourage imagination and record important stories from Jewish history. Many of the short stories featured here contain morals, making them timeless and appealing, and relatable to children of all ages, regardless of nationality or religion. Illustrated by a 14-year-old student, Edith Rudin, the color plates in this book add visual interest and a youthful aesthetic that enhances the overall charm.
Had it not been for Emily's interest in Judah's writing, who was considered a master storyteller in his day, these pieces of children's literature may have been lost to time altogether. Emily's best-known work, Breakfast for the Birds was popular throughout the 20th century, especially among the Jewish community rendering it both a beloved classic and an important part of Jewish heritage.
