Set of Six Antique French Luncheon Plates - Rococo Portrait Couple - Pink and Gold with Embossed Edge- Made in France
In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different. Coco Chanel
{HISTORY}
Tracing the origin story of this very pretty and very rare set of antique dishes was a giant exploration through the world of antique dish making. Because these were unmarked on the back except for the word FRANCE and because we found no other exact match anywhere online it has been tricky to identify a distinct maker. These mysteries lead us to draw up some conclusions which we feel are pretty accurate as to time period and style.
Made of soft-paste porcelain, the precursor to the delicate hard paste porcelain most people are familiar with, these plates most likely date to the 1890s when dish makers had to stamp the place of origin on all dishes for export. They feature a bright pink rim with gold edging and embossed design work along with a series of three different rococo transferware courting couples in the center of each plate.
This set looks similar to early Sevres portrait plates, so if you are a lover of that style, these would fit in beautifully with your collection. With the bright colors contained in each couple's clothing, these dishes offer many options when it comes to coordinating a variety of different colors and patterns, making them a fun choice for a myriad of unique table settings. It's a truly remarkable set, full of time-traveled history with a marvelously decadent spirit about them that is effortlessly French and therefore effortlessly stylish.
