{HISTORY}

Made in November 1928, this very rare platter by Taylor Smith Taylor was made in Chester, West Virginia for their Paramount Ivory Series. 

Designed by Kenneth Beattie in 1927, the Paramount series featured a unique rectangular shape with curved lines along two sides of the edge for comfortable grip and ease in carrying. A scalloped rim with very thin embossing, a deeper well in the body, and a colorful floral pattern completed the overall aesthetic. 

Beautifully bright and bold, this dish pattern is called Spring Flowers and contains an unusual bouquet of mums, tulips, and Himalayan blue poppies. One of our favorite things around the Vintage Kitchen is the use of the color orange which was so popular in dishware of the 1920s and 1930s. It is such a dynamic shade and so complementary to most food pairings as well as being a cheerful kitchen color. when it comes to decoration. This platter encapsulates the prettiest shades of orange in regard to the mums -  a hue that lies somewhere on the color scale between tangerine and pumpkin. 

In November 1928, just one year after Kenneth filed his designs patents for the Paramount shape, this platter was made in a complete set featuring plates, bowls, cups, and all the typical servers. A hit from the beginning, this design was only in production until the mid-1930s. 

A true eyewitness to 20th-century life and design, sadly, less than a year after this beauty was made, the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. Tragedy befell Richard Beattie too. Six years later in the winter of 1934, he and his wife died in a car accident. Luckily, this platter escaped a sad story and has traveled the past nine decades beautifully.

{CONDITION}

As is the case with any ninety-year-old time traveler, this piece does show a few signs of an adventurous life lived. Overall, it's in beautiful shape. The colors are bright and the lines of the floral bouquet are crisp and clear. There is delicate crazing throughout, some light staining near the bottom bouquet and along some of the edges on the rim, and the backside of the platter contains pink staining as well as a small age-old chip on the rim that is only visible from the backside.
