Vintage Round Tiles - French Fruit and Berry Design - Ceramic Trivets, Hot Plates, Wall Hangings
There's no end to imagination in the kitchen. Julia Child
{HISTORY}
These colorful French ceramic fruit and berry botanical tiles are a pretty yet mysterious batch. Featuring a jam theme, each one represents a different type of fruit - apricots, cherries, prunes and currents.
The English pottery, Johnson Brothers, designed a similar dish pattern to these tiles, so possibly they were part of that collection and therefore made in England, sometime around the 1980s. We can't verify this completely because the back of each tile is covered in a blue felt material, so there are no identifying makers marks or backstamps.
That brings us to the purpose of these pretty pieces. They each come with built-in hangers on the back (cutouts in the blue felt fabric) which suggests decorative display. But they offer other purposes too - use as trivets, hot pads or large coasters for wine bottles or pitchers lend an air of practicality. One of the most admirable things about French kitchens items are their ability to be both beautiful and functional. These four all fall right in line with that thinking. There are lots of ways to incorporate them into your space in meaningful ways, whether they serve as purely decorative, purely useful or both. As Julia said, there's no end to imagination in the kitchen, especially when it comes to these charmers!
