{HISTORY}

First published in 1954, Peter Hunt's Cape Cod Cookbook is the joyful collection of authentic Cape Cod recipes steeped in New England history, traditional recipes brought over by Portuguese immigrants, and modern midcentury recipes created by returning visitors traveling to and from the Cape who added their own a splash of cosmopolitan character and international flair to the kitchen. 

As an American artist and designer, Peter Hunt, aka Frederick Lowe Schnitzer (1896-1967) had an engaging and colorful way of bringing creativity to the house via his hand-painted folk art furniture, his undying love of the Cape and its salty, island-studded atmosphere, and his unabashed joy of spending mealtimes time with friends from all walks of life. 

Written in conversational tone and full of newsy stories about life on Cape Cod, its inhabitants, and its regional food history, reading Peter Hunt's Cape Cod Cookbook is a bit like having a meal with with the author himself. Insightful, engaging, and illustrated with Peter's own art, this whimsical book caught the hearts of life-long New Englanders and visitors so much so that it was reprinted several times over several decades. 

This edition was printed in 1962 by Gramercy Publishing Company and retains its original dust jacket. Interesting recipes include Fish House Punch, Goulash (three variations!), Pumpkin Cake, Vinha D'Alhoes Marinade, Ginger Ice, Trutas, Potato Pancakes, Spanish Rice with Mussels and Clams, Portuguese Kale Soup, five different recipes for Fruitcake, Filet of Sole with Lobster Sauce, Red Pepper Jam, and Sopaipillas. 

A lifelong artist, who permanently settled on Cape Cod following his New Jersey upbringing,  Peter Hunt's paintings are defined by colorful, primitive styles and folk art subject matters. True characters, just like the man himself, Peter painted whimsical, eclectic, and eye-catching pieces for wall display, furniture, fabric, metalware and decorative art objects.

A friend and ally to other up and coming artists, a charming party guest and dinner companion, a shopkeeper, and a trend-setter specializing in repurposing and upscaling furniture, Peter was a well-known Cape Cod figure and a favorite among New York and Boston art collecting societies. His work is held in private and public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition, this book is clean and bright throughout, with just one small cooking smudge in the margins of a cocktail recipe. The jacket is covered in a clear protective mylar sleeve. A few pages around the 100 page mark are coming away from the spine in one area, but the pages are not loose and are in no danger of coming completely apart or falling out. The spine is tight and the pink coverboards are very clean and bright. A previous gift inscription is written in pencil on the inside endpaper and dated May 6th, 1973
