{HISTORY}

Handmade, most likely in Mexico this replica of an ancient Olmec blackware pottery effigy vessel depicts a bird with a beak, tiny feet, and bulging eyes. Full of character and modern-day charm, this bird represents a lengthy history of the Olmec civilization that dates back to Mexico between 1200 BC - 400 BC.

Predating the Mayan civilization, the Olmecs were considered the first major civilization with class structures, trades, and skills that informed future civilizations. They studied astronomy, mathematics, architecture, waterway transportation systems, agriculture, and art. Believed to have originally descended from Asian countries, following the Ice Age the Olmecs arrived in Mexico where they flourished before mysteriously disappearing around 350 BC.

When it came to art, along with giant figureheads made of stone, animals were also important subjects that represented specific deities. Birds were gods of the sky and symbolized rulers, agriculture, hunting, and the sun. This bird-like vessel might have been a replica of the Olmec Bird Monster, which was much more firece looking than this sweet statue.

But since we couldn't find any exact matches to this specific style of effigy and since it is marked REPLICA on the bottom, we are assuming that this a modern interpretation of an ancient Olmec statue or ideology.  Possibly it was made for sale in a museum in association with a specific Mesoamerican exhibit.

Whatever the scenario that brought this little bird to life, he's a charmer for certain. Made entirely of blackware pottery, he's smooth and shiny with a matte finish and subtle color variations near his wings and tail. Considered to be in the in the style of blackware, this bird is actually a very dark brown color - closer to espresso bean than black. From all angles, he exudes personality and makes for an eye-catching decorative piece wherever he is placed.
