Animals were his familiars; he visited the Paris zoo regularly with enthusiastic interest , and he knew and felt for the wild and tame creatures of field and barnyard. Louise Bogan

{HISTORY}

Originally published in 1899, Jules Renard's Natural Histories has been a favorite of readers and writers for over 100 years. Described as poetic, exacting and insightfully clever, his musings of nature through simply expressed observations, have a way of capturing the imagination.

In Jules' mind, the animal kingdom and the plant world are alive with details that are still so fresh and engaging today it is hard to believe that he lived between 1864-1910. The hogs have bellies swollen like gooseberries, worms stretch themselves out like fine noodles, fleas are specks of tobacco with springs in them, cats have heads closed up like fists, swans float like clouds, chickens walk like barefoot humans. And that's just a mere handful of the more than 60 creatures he tackles  in this delightfully, imaginative book.

This is the first printing  of 1966 edition, published by George Brazilliar and contains the original illustrations by French artist Toulouse-Lautrec.
