Mrs. Foote's Rose Book - Harriett Risley Foote - 1948 Rare First Edition - Cultivating and Growing Roses
I want to make, for the good of the rose, and for the benefit of rose growers, methods of which I have found to be so successful that they have been taken up all over the world... Harriett Risley Foote
In the horticulture world, Harriett Risley Foote (1863-1951) was a bit famous. As a rose enthusiast for over 50 years, Harriett learned everything about cultivating roses from hands-on experience managing her own garden in Marblehead, MA and then by helping other homeowners manage theirs around the country. Working with all size gardens, from big estates to small sections of a simple patch - Harriett was always concerned first and foremost, with making the most beautiful, healthy, vigorous rose garden possible.
Sought after throughout her life as an authority on the subject of rose cultivation, and at at the bequest of many fans and admirers of her work, Harriett recorded five decades of information learned through trial and error, here, in Mrs. Foote's Rose Book. Published in 1948, just three years before her death, it includes all the tips, techniques, and recommendations on varietals that made her gardens ultimately so successful and admired. A trendsetter of her time, Harriett's methods were sometimes controversial and not in keeping with previously known rules and regulations regarding the care of rose gardens. Instead, Harriet brought her own practical knowledge and hands-on experience to this field of study yielding proven results that any rose grower could apply.
