{HISTORY}

Julia Child nor her runaway classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking needs no introduction to the culinary household. Along with two friends, Louisette and Simone (affectionately known as Simca) these ladies managed to singlehandedly change the way American home cooks approached French food in the 1960s. Reprinted dozens of times, MTAOFC has sold millions of copies since it was first published in 1961 becoming a beloved staple in kitchens around the world. 

We suspect this rare, edition (only bearing a 1961 date) was printed after the second volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking debuted in 1970, making this book part of the first two volume set. Significantly smaller than the boxed one and two volume sets of the 40th and 50th anniversary editions published in 2006 and 2016, this book contains no other publication information other than the original date of 1961. This indicates that it is an earlier edition, but the title page contains the words volume one indicating it would have been printed following the second volume. 

That being said, nothing has changed as far as content. It still contains over 680 pages of sought-after recipes that have become "classic Julia" staples... Boeuf Bourguignon, Mussels Steamed in Wine. Mushrooms Sauteed in Butter and Garlic, Custard Apple Tart,  Dessert Crepes, Clafoutis ... so many of her superb signature specialties live here in this one volume. 

Just like the original 1961 version, this edition is illustrated throughout with drawings by Sidonie Coryn and includes Julia's lovely inscription... To La Belle France whose peasants, fishermen, housewives, and princes - not to mention her chefs - through generations of inventive and loving concentration have created one of the world's great arts.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. There are a few cooking spots and splatters ona few pages including wine splash on the paper side of the spine (which we adore for its note of festivity). The cover boards are clean and bright as well as the interior pages. The spine is tight and all pages are intact.
