{HISTORY}
Before there was the 1991 movie starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, there was the 1951 movie starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. Before that, there was the 1948 publication of the book by Edward Streeter. Father of the Bride is a classic timeless story of parents trying to let go of their adult children. If you are unfamiliar with the story it features the Banks family with father Stanley, having a rough and tumble time getting used to the idea that his only daughter is getting married. He fights his feelings of trying to let her go and grow-up during the entire planning of her wedding to both funny and poignant effect. If you are familiar with the movies and the situations that occur - you'll recognize all those scenes here in the book and you'll laugh and cry right along with Stanley and his basket of mixed emotions.
A bestselling novel of the year for 1949, Father of the Bride was an instant success charming readers around the world. Combined with its often unilluminated subject matter Streeter's novel was illustrated by New Yorker magazine cartoonist Gluyas Williams, which lends added whimsy to both the story and the book's presentation.
