My mom thinks everything is an emergency. If the tomatoes aren't right, that's an emergency. If the fish isn't fresh, that's an emergency. If the cooks aren't happy, that's an emergency..." (from the beginning)

{HISTORY}

If you don't already know, Alice Waters is legendary in the fresh food movement. She opened a restaurant called Chez Panisse in California in the early 1970's and served only the freshest, most local and most organic food she could get her hands on. Forty years later, her restaurant is still going strong as well as her desire to educate America about healthy habits, especially kids. In 1992 she wrote this children's book about her daughter Fanny's adventures at the restaurant and included over 40 recipes that Fanny likes to cook herself.

Like two books in one - this is a storybook about behind-the-scenes life at a busy restaurant and also a cookbook for the budding chef ready to make her own mark on the culinary world. It is told in Fanny's own engaging voice so kids will relate to her perspective and her interest (or non-interest in some cases!) to certain types of food.

Recipes are broken down into 13 chapters based on main ingredient and include vegetables, pasta, fruit, chicken, bread and pizza and cover snack time, dinner and desserts. A fun sampling of dishes includes Plum Ice Cream, Guacamole, Garlic Mayonnaise, Corncakes, Carrot and Parsley Salad, Roast Chicken with Herbs, Halibut Baked on a Fig Leaf and Polenta.
