{HISTORY}

By the time Edith Barber (1892-1963) published this long-anticipated cookbook in 1940 she was already 13 years into her career as the food columnist at the New York Sun. Writing daily columns and receiving feedback correspondence offered her the opportunity to get inside the head and hearts of American home cooks understanding both their weaknesses and their accomplishments when it came to all things culinary. 

Here in this cookbook, Edith addresses all those conversations in a calm, practical voice that helps set home cooks on the path to success. A complete cookbook covering 524 pages of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, Edith made sure who recipes were accessible and interesting to all cooks no matter what their skill level. From the novice  beginner to plain and simple food aficionados to home cooks with lots of experience and more refined palates, Edith covered all bases of skill and appetite. 

What is especially lovely about this cookbook is its vintage style. With its red and blue pinstripe cover, color photograph plates, and fun fonts, Edith's cookbook is as stylish as it is instructive. 

All recipes include whole ingrediamts and include a bevy of menus for luncheons, dinners, tea parties, cocktail parties, holidays and feasts for a crowd and also include suggesstions for serving (with or without maids or wait staff !)for an extra dose of how we used to eat back when!

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. There are minor random cooking spots on some pages throughout (mostly around the baking chapters!) and pencil nottations on some recipes. Pages 308 and 309 have dark tanning marks caused by acid from a vintage newspaper article that was stored in the book. Photographs are bright and colorful. Spine is tight and all pages are intact.
