In the 1930s, when you wanted to design a bird-friendly landscape for your country house or your city lot, you called upon the gardening advice of landscape architect and horticultural expert Margaret McKenny (1885-1969).

A Pacific Northwest native, Margaret spent a large majority of her life in Washington state studying birds, mushrooms, plants and how all three connected. For a time, she also worked in New York City too for the Botanical Garden, the Museum of Natural History and the Garden Club of America all affording her a complete understanding of bird culture on both coasts and in all types of gardens.

In 1939, she published this beautiful bird about how to turn your own patch of nature into a garden rich with colorful wildlife. Packed full of information, Margaret discusses birds from all angles - food, shelter, migration paths, foliage, song, sighting and preferred natural habitats. Included here are landscape drawings for a variety of situations - small yards, big meadows, city lots, country acres. There are lists of native plantings broken down by regions around the US that are most attractive to specific types of birds. There are bird box illustrations so that readers can build and help establish generations of bird families for decades of enjoyment.

Peppered throughout are color plate bird portraits illustrated by celebrated wildlife artist Walter Alois Weber (1906-1979) along a section of black and white photographs depicting birds in various situations. Identification notes on a big variety of feathered flyers acts as a field guide for helpful reference.
