Betty Crocker's Cake and Frosting Mix Cookbook - 1966 Edition 4th Printing
To express the artist in you - say it with a cake! (From the Introduction)
{HISTORY}
Betty Crocker, the ever-helpful maven and muse in the vintage kitchen, debuted their Cake and Frosting Mix Cookbook in 1966 to the joy of busy bakers everywhere. Working in tandem with their boxed cake and frosting mixes found at the grocery, this cookbook focused solely on the best cake recipes achieved with pre-packaged ingredients.
By this point in baking history, boxed cake mixes had been on the market for over 20 years. When this cookbook launched in the mid-1960s, the test kitchen at Betty Crocker had perfected both the taste and decoration of the boxed cake mix.
As much about artistry as it was about convenience, this cookbook brought a new level of trust and reliability to cake makers. And also a whole lot of fun. Bakers didn't need to worry as much about exact measurements, and particular ingredients for the sometimes tricky, sometimes finicky world of cake baking. Betty had taken care of all of that in the prepackaged mixes. Now that assurance was provided that the cake part would turn out just great once baked in the oven, the fun part of this cookbook was about exploring the endless amount of decorating possibilities. Cakes for all! Sweet treats for every occasion, event, and festivity imaginable in a calendar year could be found here.
Containing over 300 recipes, this cookbook starts with the basics of cake making and the fundamentals of decorating at the beginning, to ensure success right from the start. And then it unleashes a plethora of design possibilities to suit your needs and tastes. Layer cakes, sandwiches cakes, crumb cakes. Pound cakes, sheet cakes, fudge. Bar cookies, wedding cakes, jelly rolls. If it's a cake, it's here!
For anyone who is just starting out in the baking world, this is a good cookbook to begin with, since the exacting guesswork of from-scratch cake-making has been taken out of the mix (no pun intended!). Home bakers will gain knowledge and expertise on the art of cake decorating building confidence that may eventually lead to adventures in from-scratch baking. More experienced bakers will love this cookbook for its decorative appeal and inspiring retro approach to the physical aesthetic of cakes.
