Antique Porcelain Bowl with Pink and Peach Roses and Embossed Detailing
Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light. Theodore Roethke
The beauty of an antique porcelain bowl is always arresting. This one, in particular, was most likely made in Germany around the turn of the 20th century. It features a bright display of garden roses tucked into a rim highlighted with embossed sways and a dotted edge. As if that weren't style enough, it is accented by a gold center medallion and gold stripes. How elegant!
Unmarked as to maker or manufacturer, it is a travesty that we cannot attribute this beauty of a bowl to a specific pottery. In such cases, we can only imagine the life this serving piece must have had before it came to rest for a time here in the shop. There have definitely been a few adventures involved, as there is a little chip near the center medallion and some rubbing along the edge of the gold rim.
Those testaments to time seem insignificant though. Attractive dishes have a way of charming us away from their slight flaws and towards their most beautiful elements. In this case, those delightful elements are the three big rose bouquets and the embossed swags circling the inner rim.
In various shades of pink and peach, these florals are a natural complement to the summer fruits that bear similar shades. Pile this bowl high with fresh peaches, raspberries plucked from the vine or pears gathered from the orchard and you'll have not only a handy fruit bowl on your counter but also a lovely vignette worthy of an artist's paintbrush.

- Serving bowl size
While this bowl has traveled the century beautifully they are a couple of spots that contain a few flaws. There are three, small chips (pit mark style)... two located near the center medallion and the third near one of the embossed swags on the sidewall. Some of the gold along the edge of the rim has worn in some spots. And on the underside of the bowl at the base there is a small surface chip. These marks of time do not affect the use of the bowl in any way, but we recommend using it for display purposes only or for use as a holder of fruits or non-food items in order to keep the integrity of the bowl intact for future appreciation.
