Antique Pink & Green Floral Platter by Burgess & Co Circa 1903
{HISTORY}
Made in 1903 by Burgess & Co, this large vintage platter features sprays of pink roses, and lavender daisies, tucked in between a smattering of spring green leaves all accented by an embossed edge and a gold rim.
Many people confuse Burgess & Co with Burgess & Leigh, but the latter was a pottery in England, and Burgess & Co was located in Trenton, New Jersey. Like tracing the genealogy lines of a family tree, Burgess & Co. assumed many other names under its original International Pottery umbrella.
First founded in 1860 By Henry Speeler as International Pottery, eight years later it became known as Speeler & Sons, when Henry's sons came into partnership. New owners a decade later called it Lincoln Pottery. Then with the advent of another change of hands, it became Burgess & Campbell, and then Burgess & Co. All the while International Pottery would still sometimes appear alongside one of these names on their dishware too. If you were looking for pieces from the original Speeler days, all this naming could be a bit confusing, but it's also an interesting example of how often a pottery could change hands and brand identity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Particularly when it came to dishware manufacturing in a hub like Trenton, NJ which was home to hundreds of potteries between the Industrial Age and the mid-20th century.
Back to our homefront, regarding this 120-year-old platter, it would be just as pretty displayed on the wall as it would be in service on the table, making it a functional and festive dish no matter how it's incorporated into your collection.
