{HISTORY}

To say that the Sebring family was instrumental to pottery manufacturing in the 19th and 20th centuries is a major understatement. Descended from a Pennsylvania farming couple in the mid-1800s, the seven Sebring brothers became owners, builders, buyers, and sellers of over a dozen potteries in Ohio beginning in the late 1800s.

With an impact that would last well into the 20th century and extend to several generations beyond them, the brothers purchased their first pottery in 1887. Twelve more would follow in quick succession all the way through the mid-1930s when the last Sebring brother passed away.  This platter was made sometime in the early 1900s in their fifth pottery.  Simply named The Sebring Pottery Company, also known as S.P.Co.  it was located in Sebring, OH and operated from the early 1900s to the 1940s.

Made in the early years, just after S.P.Co. was founded, this small antique serving platter was made somewhere around 1909-1912, and features the Kent shape with its scalloped edge and dotted, embossed rim.  Enhanced by bouquets of pink and white roses and decorative gold floral swags, this platter might be petite in size, but it's eye-catching in design. A lovely example of the Sebring family's reputation for creating beautiful designs and durable dishware, this pattern, is similar to other designs they created for wedding registry sets.

It's fun to think that this pretty little server might have been a favored gift on the wedding registry of a Victorian or Edwardian bride over 100 years ago. The S.P.Co. Kent shape is not impossible to find today but this pattern within their design catalogue is. We love its dotted edge, small size, bright pastel color palette, and large loopy scallops.
