Antique Marx & Gutherz Porcelain Floral Cup & Saucer circa 1884-1898

{HISTORY}

With bouquets of flowering branches and a beige and sky-blue color palette accented with gold infinity-style flourishes, this hand-decorated porcelain cup and saucer set offers the prettiest color palette for fall, winter, and seaside decorating.

Made by Marx & Gutherz in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia between 1884-1898, this set carries both the Marx & Gutherz mark as well as the Austrian export mark signaling that it was made in Carlsbad during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Well known for their beautiful designs, Marx & Gutherz maintained a production and distribution relationship with American dishware importer Lazarus Straus, who was affiliated with Macy's department store. When this cup and saucer set was made, Marx & Gutherz was operating as a highly skilled decorating studio, which reflects in the delicate floral detailing and hand-painting. Large and small leaves mingle together with big-blossomed flowers on woody stalks. Colors include sky blue, beige, taupe, sand, and ivory with gold accents. It's a beautiful color palette for kitchens and interiors that prefer warm neutrals, pale accents, and soft colors.

Gorgeous for display and storytelling inspiration, you might not want to incorporate this one into your collection for serving coffee and tea these days, but when it comes to a beautiful display piece, hand-decorated porcelain offers such a delicate aesthetic.

{CONDITION}

This cup and saucer set contains no cracks or stains, but it does carry some hallmarks of a 140-year-old adventurer. There are a few darkened dots on the inside of the cup - marks of the tiniest of chip flakes from many decades long ago, and the gold has worn away from the rim of the saucer and the cup. The pattern design is very crisp and clear and beautifully detailed.

The cup measures just under 4" inches in diameter x 2.25" inch (height). The saucer measures 6.25" inches in diameter. Together this set weighs 11 oz.
