{HISTORY}

With scalloped edges and a beige and sky-blue color palette accented with gold infinity-style flourishes, these hand-decorated porcelain dishes offer the prettiest color palette for fall, winter, and seaside decorating. 

Made by Marx & Gutherz in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia between 1884-1898, these two plates carry both the Marx & Gutherz mark as well as the Austrian export mark signaling that they were made in Carlsbad during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  

Well known for their beautiful designs, Marx & Gutherz  maintained a production and distribution relationship with American dishware importer Lazarus Straus, who was affiliated with Macy's department store, which is how they came here to the Northeast far from their Czechoslovakian pottery beginnings.

When these plates were made, Marx & Gutherz was operating as a highly skilled decorating studio, which reflects in the delicate floral detailing and hand-painting. Large and small leaves mingle together with big-blossomed flowers on woody stalks. Colors include sky blue, beige, taupe, sand, and ivory with gold accents. It's a beautiful color palette for kitchens and interiors that prefer warm neutrals, pale accents, and soft colors.

These two have seen some adventure in their 140 years of life, which might not make them the most appropriate for food service these days, but when it comes to decorating or tablescape display, they are easy and effortlessly beautiful options.

{CONDITION}

In lovely antique condition, these plates are bright and colorful and contain no major cracks, chips, spots, or staining. Each plate does contain one small hairline crack— one in the center near the big flower on one plate and one at the rim, measuring about 1” in length on the other plate. There is also a small chip on the underside of one plate at the rim which cannot be seen from the front. The porcelain is very bright and shiny on both plates, and the floral bouquets are crisp and clear. Please see photos.
