{HISTORY}

One of the most successful English potteries, Johnson Bros was in business from 1890-2015, and specialized in exporting dishware to the American market. Unlike other English potteries who catered to English sensibilities, Johnson Brothers followed the buying trends and styles of American consumers, making them adept at understanding the serving needs of American households and hospitality venues.

Establishing fruitful relationships in America in the 1890s,  Robert Johnson's business acumen was key to the pottery's success in the US dishware market. Robert, one of the four founding family members making up the Johnson Brothers pottery, was the best representative of the potential and possibility that the pottery could have offered.

When this pattern, Valencia Lace, debuted in 1903, it was part of Johnson Bros. hotelware collection. Thought to be named after luxurious Valencia lace needlework, the pattern name was indicative of the high-quality craftsmanship and beautiful decoration that Johnson Bros was known for. Heavy, thick-walled, and durable it was made to withstand the hustle bustle of busy dining rooms while lending an elegant aesthetic to hotel settings.  For sale in large cities like Boston, it's not certain which hotel this bowl may have wound up in, but the fun of collecting restaurant ware and hotelware are all the possibilities that swirl around their romantic long-ago history.

Containing a beautiful lace pattern with suns, crosses, dots, stripes and swags in a pastel shade of teal green that also sometimes looks blue-grey depending on the light, this bowl offers year-round appeal.  Pretty for Easter table centerpieces, spring decor or cozy winter kitchens,, the Valencia Lace pattern is very hard to find these days. A true traveler from long ago, this bowl was made in 1913 or slightly thereafter.
