{HISTORY}

Rimmed in violets, with a few extra blooms scattered here and there towards the center, these antique porcelain berry bowls feature the prettiest color palette for the spring and summer season. Soft blues and lavenders mix with sage and mint. Pale pea and plum gently pool like watercolors against a bright white background.

One thing is always guaranteed when it comes to antique porcelain from Limoges, France. It's always beautiful. These four berry bowls were made by Haviland & Co. between 1889-1931.

Synonymous with fine quality porcelain - not only an assurance of exquisite craftsmanship but also of gorgeous patterns -  the Havilands were Limoges' most famous family, representing a manufacturing dynasty of exquisite craftsmanship since the 1800s.

Like all families with generations of an empire behind them, the Havilands weren't without their own dramas. We featured their interesting family story in a blog post here, detailing the competitive nature of the market and also of the Havilands themselves as each member of the family raced to produce the most exquisite porcelain in the world.

Between the 1950s-1970s, Haviland enthusiast Arlene Sclheiger cataloged the thousands of different patterns bearing the Haviland name. Since many Haviland patterns were not named in the factory, Arlene devised her own numerical pattern system to differentiate one Haviland design from another. It was a huge undertaking, one that consumed a large portion of her life. But it was not in vain. Arlene's work is still the standard catalog tool used by collectors today.

These bowls were part of the Schleiger 452 pattern, which came in several different variations including pieces that were accented with gold detailing and pink violets.
