Antique Green & White Floral Gravy Boat by John Maddock & Sons circa 1896-1906
The goodness of John Maddock & Sons Royal Vitreous is praised the world over... (from a 1912 dishware advertisement, Scranton, PA)
Made in England between 1896 and 1906 by John Maddock & Sons, this antique gravy boat features the prettiest green and white floral pattern. So similar to T & R Boote's Marlborough, Johnson Bros' Florentine, and John Maddock's Hamilton and Warwick patterns, the florals on this gravy boat match none of those other patterns exactly yet mirrors their same aesthetic.
These similarities are not unusual, as many potteries kept up with their competition and if one pattern or dish style was selling particularly well others raced to create a similar design. The fact that this one matches those other patterns so well just goes to show how popular a green-and-white color palette was in those last few years of the 19th century.
All of this close-but-not-quite resemblance makes this gravy boat a breeze when incorporating it into your own green and white floral collection. Only upon very close inspection would you notice that the patterns don't completely match up. To illustrate that point, we photographed it with an antique 1890s T & R Boote soup bowl in the Marlborough pattern so you could see the similarity.
One thing that is especially beautiful about this gravy boat is the pattern swatch on the interior of the spout - a nice little detail that sets it apart from other gravy boats and adds an extra bit of flourish when viewed from the side.
In gorgeous antique condition, this boat can of course be used for its original intended purpose of serving gravy and sauces, but creativity also ensues when fashioning a unique tablesetting. Add some greenery and turn it into a table centerpiece. Fill it up with vintage glass ball ornaments in shades of green and gold and you add instant holiday cheer to a mantel or a sideboard. Add a bouquet of short-stemmed flowers and it becomes a vase for all your garden blooms. Or just let it rest alongside your antique whiteware collection and watch it cast a shimmery sparkle across your entire kitchen. Beauty knows no bounds.
