If I am to be saved it is because your love redeems me. Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera

{HISTORY}

When it comes to decor and dining, there are few things more romantic than a candelabra. Whether it sits on your table, actively illuminating the faces of your dinner guests, or it is permanently perched on a mantel, in service when the power goes out or a certain aesthetic needs to be achieved, a candelabra of historic significance works a bit of magic in a variety of ways.

This one was made by the Forbes Silver Company, which specialized in silverplate manufacturing beginning in 1894. Based in Connecticut, in 1898, Forbes was one of many East Coast silver companies that joined together to form the International Silver Company. It is unclear, as to how long the Forbes mark was used once it joined the ISC but it no longer appears after 1935. So this candelabra dates anywhere from the 1890s to the 1930s. Having said that, we speculate that it ranges somewhere between the art nouveau/art deco periods (the 1910s-1920s) thanks to its curvy lines and octagonal pedestal base. From some angles, these curving details form the infinity symbol, which adds a lovely layer of context.

With its shimmery rainbow-like patina and its four-arm, five cup shape, this candelabra offers an air of storytelling that has been expressed through each owner's imagination. For decades it has illuminated the night, the party, the occasion, imprinting memories of every candle burned and extinguished over a century. Certainly, it could be polished to a bright state but one of the most fetching features of this candelabra, in particular, is the tarnished impression of a hand that once grasped the center.
