It seems as though someone had sown in a bare field, a sprinkling of history, poetry and pictures, and every seed had shot up in a flowery tangle. Edith Wharton, The Buccaneers

{HISTORY}

Here it is. An antique platter with a flowery field touched by hand and history from a pottery in production for just a slim amount of time.

Started in the late 1800s, the East Palestine Pottery Company was located in East Palestine, Ohio where it operated independently for over two decades before it was purchased by fellow area potter W.S. George in the early 1900s. With its slim window of production, East Palestine Pottery Company (also known as E.P.P.Co) are harder to find making them all the more exciting for antique dishware collectors.

The factory burned down under W.S. George's management in 1912, and although W.S. George was using both E.P.P.Co's production facility, dish patterns and shapes upon acquisition, W.S. George marked all pieces with their own stamp beginning in 1904, so finding a piece with just an E.P.P.Co backstamp is both a treat and a treasure.

That detail aside, this E.P.P.Co platter is gorgeous and loaded with antique character.  With its gold hand-painted splatter spray style handles, hand-decorated raspberry pink flowers (possibly some sort of morning glory or moonflower), wispy fern-like green transferware, and embossed design and pin-tuck edge, there is quite a bit of design that went into this pretty pattern.  Combined with light staining marks and a bevy of light-crazing lines this platter looks every bit of its marvelous 140 years of age. Just the type of authentic wear you want to see in a shabby chic style aesthetic.

The gold detailing at the handles is wearing in some spots.  Please see photos.
