 {HISTORY}

A pair of international travelers with a passport full of history behind them, these two antique plates were made in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia, between 1884 and 1915, and then exported to New York City retailer, Bawo & Dotter, for distribution.

Noteworthy for any history buff, they also contain the word Austria on their backstamps, which denotes the point in time when Czechoslovakia was still under Austrian rule. That governance meant that all dishes exported from a Czechoslovakian city (in this case, Carlsbad) had to be stamped with the Austrian government marks too. This often confuses dish collectors into thinking their dishes were made in Carlsbad, Austria, but really it was Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia -  a bustling centuries-old hub for porcelain dishware manufacture.

In keeping with Carlsbad's highly regarded manufacturing heritage, the U.S. import firm Bawo & Dotter, founded in New York City in the 1860s, established its own fine reputation for both producing and introducing high-quality porcelain dishware to the American market. With factories in Limoges, France,  Fischern, Austria, and Steinschenau, Germany, along with a decorating studio in Carlsbad, and business relationships with Royal Crown Derby and Copeland/Spode in England, Bawo & Dotter was a go-to source for high-quality European and English dishware in America.

Known to have a keen sense for design and detail, their ability to select pieces of stunning pattern work and color, and their unceasing demands for superb craftmanship, made Bawo & Dotter a trusted source for dishware buyers. Unfortunately, World War I interrupted their import operations and caused the company to file for bankruptcy in 1915. Much of their inventory was purchased by other local and regional retailers, but the days of Bawo & Dotter as makers and sellers of dishware ended before WWI was over.

These two plates feature a beautiful floral pattern of clover-like flowers in shades of coral and peach. Accented with shades of spring green, light mocha, and espresso, it's a gorgeous pattern that transitions well between all the seasons.
