{HISTORY}
In the 1920s, this was how you decorated a cake! Thanks to the solid engineering of the Brooklyn Metal Stamping Corporation located in Brooklyn, New York, the Deco-Riter debuted with strong and solid assurity that this pastry pen would get the job right. Or should we say write?!
A clever cross between the word decorating and writing, the all-metal Deco-Riter came with up to 12 piping tips, and a syringe-style piping container along with a sheet of instructions, tip style illustrations, and three recipes for different types of frosting (plain, chocolate and egg).
Available for about $0.50 each Deco-Riter's were often found in department stores and general stores around the country where they were stocked sometimes with the kitchen items and sometimes in the hardware section. In order to showcase the ease of this baking tool, some stores even held demonstrations on how to use this time-saving and professional-looking tool.
A rare find of vintage baking equipment, this set of 4 tips, original instruction sheet and the piping container comes packaged in its original mid-1920s era box. Featuring a proud home baker and her happy birthday cake, this very well-made decorator set features screw-on tips and a screw-on cap for the syringe barrel. Inside the barrel is fitted with two metal washers and bolt that slow along for the release of the icing as pressure is applied with the handle. Such a simple system, it's fun to see that cake decorating tools haven't changed all that much in 100 years!
The Brooklyn Metal Stamping Corporation operated on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY during the 1920s and 1930s. They made a number of different items beyond pastry tools including radios, toys, and other household items. Several other companies also made these syringe-style cake decorators but Brooklyn Metal seems to be the most heavy-duty of the bunch, as most others were made out of aluminum or plastic, especially as the decades progressed.
