An Introduction to Trees - John Kieran - First Edition circa 1954
There is endless enjoyment in store for anyone who seeks a closer acquaintance with these ageless and admirable benefactors of mankind. John Kieran from the Forward
{HISTORY}
A lover of nature, a curious writer, a passionate sportscaster, a radio quiz show host. James Kieran made a fulfilling life out of all the things that impressed him most. Born in the Bronx in 1892, one of the things that captured his attention was studying the natural world surrounding New York City during a time in history when urbanization was beginning to tame the wild lands New York was built on. An interest in trees, birds, critters, and fish of this area led to various writings on the changing landscape, especially in his hometown borough of the Bronx. Just before he published his most well-known book, A Natural History of New York City in 1959, he published this book - An Introduction to Trees in 1954.
Meant as a simple primer covering 100 trees found in the North American landscape, John details in enthusiastic voice, interesting facts about each chosen specimen along with descriptives of each tree's unique aspects as far as leaves, bark, flowers, and fruit for easy identification. Beautifully illustrated by American artist, Michael H. Bevans, each tree is illustrated in full color, some including multiple images of dramatic seasonal changes as well.
It was John's hope in writing this book, that it would become a springboard for further research and exploration of not only other trees but also other natural wonders too. A beautiful book for readers of all ages, this one is both a field guide and a love story of the natural world and all the beauty our landscape provides.
