A Cape Cod Sketch Book by Jack Frost - 1939 First Edition
...on other pages we find ourselves looking at a half-buried wreck on the outer beach, at a Provincetown wharf and fishing boats, at a shore colony viewed from across the marshes, at oyster shanties, at the odd house at North Truro with the ship's wheel on its front veranda, at East Harwich's famous "bird carver" in his workshop... Joseph C. Lincoln, Cape Cod author and poet
{HISTORY}
He may share the same name as the festive winter weather character nipping at our noses in all the holiday songs of years past, but when it comes to the real-life Jack Frost (1915-1997) he's more often identified with Cape Cod than with Christmas.
Sketched on Cape Cod during the summer of 1939 and debuting in book form during the holiday season of that same year, A Cape Cod Sketch Book, is both an art book and a history book all in one. Telling fascinating stories about off-the-beaten-path architecture, scenes, and ships around Cape Cod, Jack includes all sorts of interesting fun facts relating to the subjects he's drawn to.
Containing fun facts galore, Jack was determined to share unusual, unique and often unheard stories about the Cape that never typically meet the traveler's ear, With an insider's intimate knowledge and an artist's ability to highlight captivating details, Jack's drawings of Cape Cod are filled with colorful characters, romantic stories and legends, and a plethora of maritime-related marvels.
Inside, readers discover snippets about the bow-roofed half house at East Sandwich, the house where the handsomest man on the Cape lived, the harbor that was once just a pond, the shipwreck that became a house, the arboreal ancestry of Yarmouth's trees, the tragedy of the George and Ann shipwreck, John Arnold's 1750s architectural promise to his second wife Marjorie Smith, and the stone storehouse that still stands from the days of 19th century whale oil refinement.
Augmenting all this local lore are Jack's beautiful sketches, which he first became known for while working as an artist at the Boston Herald. A native New Englander, born in Eastport, Maine, Jack published sixty illustrated books throughout his career and in addition to his newspaper work taught fine art classes at Boston College and Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He published A Cape Cod Sketch Book at the age of 24.
