Love many things for therein lies the true strength, and whoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is done well.  Vincent Van Gogh

{HISTORY}

 Although this particular vintage serving bowl was made in Grafton, West Virginia in 1942, the story of the Carr China Company goes back a century before that, to the mid-1840's, when it's founder immigrated as a young guy to America in pursuit of dish making dreams.

For the first few years on American soil, he apprenticed with an East Coast pottery, gaining all the skills he would need to become a master at his trade. Through this lengthy education process, he not only made dishes but also valuable contacts with industry peers who would eventually come to support him when he was ready to open his own pottery plant.

Carr China Company officially opened in 1916, producing dishware for the hotel and restaurant industries. Known as one of the first manufacturers of whiteware (all white dishware free of color or design), the craftsmanship and durability of their china was excellent making them a favorite supplier among hotels and resorts with busy dining rooms and constant turnover. For over 30 years Carr China bustled along, eventually making dishes for hospitals and the US military in addition to the hospitality industry. But by the early 1950's, the burgeoning plastics market and the influx of foreign dishware imports proved too much to successfully compete with. Carr Pottery closed down forever in 1953.
