{HISTORY}

This vintage New York Central Rail Lines dinner plate is a fun one because it tells the story of three histories  in one - the Dewitt Clinton locomotive (in operation from 1831-1833), the Onandoga Pottery Company and the New York Central rail line.

The train logo featured in the center of the rim is the DeWitt Clinton, New York State's first steam locomotive built in 1831 and named after the governor DeWitt Clinton. The plate was made by the Onandaga Pottery Company, which eventually became Syracuse China. Onandoga was started in the 1870's in Syracuse, NY. In addition to making dishware for American households, they also created serving pieces for the hotel and restaurant industries which included railroad dining cars. This dinner plate was made by O.P. Co. in December 1925 for use on the New York Central Lines which ran between New York, Boston, Chicago and St. Louis.
