The primary purpose of this book is to interest the little child in, and to make him acquainted with, those feathered friends, he is most likely to see. Thornton Burgess

{HISTORY}

Written by beloved and prolific American children's book author Thornton Burgess (1874-1965), The Burgess Bird Book for Children is both a storybook and a naturalist's guide intended for the very newest of young birders.

Originally published in 1919, this rare 1925 edition weaves together beautiful color illustrations by famed ornithologist Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927) and Thornton's charming stories of woodland creatures and wildlife, including everybody's favorite bunny, Peter Rabbit.

Through his lyrical narrative and an eye on conservation, Thorton tied in detailed information about the specific habits of a range of birds found most commonly in the landscape in order to spark curiosity in the minds and hearts of young readers. It was his hope in presenting a book like this that the marriage between the natural world and enchanted stories would lay the sympathetic groundwork for children to become not only excellent birders in their older years but also excellent stewards of the natural world around them.

Now almost 100 years later, this book is still captivating. Whether you read this book aloud to your little ones or they read it themselves, readers of all ages will appreciate Thorton's way with words and Louis' gorgeous artwork.
