An apothecary should never be out of spirits. Richard Brinsley Sheridan

{HISTORY}

The Wheaton Glass Company, first founded in New Jersey in the 1880's, made all sorts of interesting glassware including pharmaceutical bottles, home canning jars, perfume bottles and cosmetic jars. But the real passion behind Theodore Wheaton's company was his love for apothecary bottles.  He began manufacturing these for both the pharmaceutical industry and the home consumer not long after he founded the company and as machinery improved and production lines increased in the early years of the 20th century Wheaton became one of the most recognized names in the glass making industry.

This vintage pharmaceutical bottle bearing an embossed nitric acid label was made sometime after the 1920's when the company changed names from T.C.W. to Wheaton. It features the original art deco style glass stopper, a beauty in and of itself, that fits securely inside the bottle keeping all contents sealed and secure.

Pharmacies of the 20th century were such aesthetically pleasing sights with all those pretty glass bottles lined up in tidy rows tucked inside big wooden cabinets. Nitric acid doesn't have the most romantic of purposes - mainly it was used for fertilizers - but now with the help of your creative imagination it can persevere into the future with much more colorful possibilities.

One of our most favorite ways to display old bottles here in the Vintage Kitchen, is on the bar cart, serving as vessels and decanters for our own signature house cocktails. Other possibilities include use as fresh flower vase, dish soap holder or a display jar for nature's petite curiosities.
