{HISTORY}

Tony Sarg (1880-1942), the world's most favorite 20th-century puppeteer, was born in Guatemala, raised in Germany and began working as an illustrator in England before he emigrated to America for love and career. A jack of all trades in the art world, Tony was skilled at a number of different creative endeavors including illustrator, animator, filmmaker, shop owner, author, interior designer, cartoonist, balloonist and his most favorite, puppetry. 

Working with such well-known companies as the Saturday Evening Post, the Waldorf Astoria, and the New York World's Fair,  he is most remembered for his work at Macy's department store during the 1920s and 30s, where he created the first large-scale oxygen, then helium, filled balloons.  These balloons would become a beloved flagship feature in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (originally known as the Christmas Parade) and would go on to inspire generations of future puppeteers including Jim Henson. 

Spirited and fun-loving, Tony also ran a curiosity shop in Nantucket where he made and sold toys whimsical inventions, marionettes, games, books, and decor pieces with his hallmark style encapsulating the essence of good-natured fun and joie-de-vivre. 

This rare vintage tin features an illustration titled On A Sunday Afternoon. Most likely it was one of a myriad of items offered for sale in his curiosity shop during the 1920s and 1930s. Due to its color palette and nostalgic theme, this tin would be especially lovely displayed during the holidays or presented in gift form with homemade cookies tucked inside. It also makes a lovely storage container for all sorts of organizational purposes.

 {CONDITION}

Overall in beautiful vintage condition. There are some minor rust marks as expected with age on the inside bottom of tin, and a slight fading on the exterior wall on one side, but other than that the illustration on the top is very clear, the colors bright and crisp and there is no significant rusting on any of the exterior imagery.
