{HISTORY}

Cheers to the useful functionality of the vintage enamelware bowl.

Most popular in the United States between the 1870s and the 1930s, enamelware's durability and perception of cleanliness were the ultimate appeal of this useful kitchen material. Unlike delicate ceramic dishes, enamelware could withstand rough handling and long journeys - exciting features as Americans migrated west to homestead via covered wagons in the 1870s. By the 1920s, focus on sanitary kitchens shined light on enamelware since its bright white color and easy-to-clean design promoted bright, clean kitchens. But by the 1930s, with the introduction of glass cookware and ceramic ovenware and bakeware,  enamelware began to fall out of popularity as these new innovative products took over the market.

Available in a variety of assorted rim colors from red to green to orange to pink, the most popular colors in vintage enamelware were pieces made with red, blue and black rims. This vintage enamelware bowl features a bright white body with a colorful cobalt blue stripe around the rim.

Large enough to securely hold a dozen eggs but small enough to easily fit in a cupboard or pantry, this bowl is ideally sized for all sorts of household purposes from garden chores to cleaning projects. Enamelware also makes a lovely companion for hiking and camping excursions given its light weight and practical use for a variety of assorted tasks.

Since most enamelware was valued as an inexpensive alternative to fine porcelain and china, many pieces were not stamped with maker's marks, as is the case with this one. So while it's impossible to pinpoint the exact era from which this one came, we can say that it has traveled the years beautifully with no condition issues.

Nowadays prized for its rustic charm and shabby chic farmhouse style, vintage enamelware is a classic component to the vintage kitchen, the backyard garden and the sustainable homestead.
