In the 1940s, this is how you lovingly cared for your flatware. You tucked each and every piece into bed in their own compartmentalized holder made of soft cotton cloth to protect the sheen and shine. So you didn't get confused, each holder was lovingly embroidered on the outside as to the contents on the inside. 

In this case, it's a rest haven for the teaspoons - those little wonders who swirl, shuttle, and scoop everything lovely to savor throughout all hours of the day.  This carrier fits a dozen spoons and would have been nestled in a drawer alongside similar holders for forks, knives and additional serving pieces. 

In our modern day, we don't always care for our utensils in such a cuddly way, but this does not disqualify the utility of such a carrier. These vintage holders work wonderfully well as pencil cases, paintbrush holders, and paint tube repositories, especially for artists on the go who like to work with outdoor magic.
