HAVING A LITTLE FUN AT MY WORK DOESN'T MAKE ME ANY LESS OF AN ARTIST. CLARICE CLIFF

{HISTORY}

Made in England during the 1930s, this sweet little pink rosebud creamer was designed by noteworthy British ceramic artist Clarice Cliff (1899-1972) for Royal Staffordshire. Featuring a repetitive image of a simple petite rose bouquet set against a swirled body,  this little charmer is a lovely example of Clarice's eclectic body of work.

Not quite as avant-garde as some of her more well-known art deco pieces, Clarice also had a love for combining traditional transferware with unique ceramic shapes and styles. You can see her creative mind at work in the subtle details here on this creamer in the subtle feather-like embossing on the handle and the whimsical swirl of the creamer's overall composition. Mirroring a polka dot pattern, there is a fresh originality and vibrancy to this creamer that reflects Clarice's fun, youthful nature and innovative approach to ceramic art.

A true free-spirit when it came to design, Clarice Cliff (1899-1972) made an iconic mark on the pottery industry from the 1920s to the 1960s. Designing hundreds of eclectic pieces that were admired by collectors the world over, she was considered one of the most remarkable ceramic artists of the 20th century.

Revered not only for her artistic merit but also for her creative ability when it came to pairing unusual shapes, colors and designs that were considered unorthodox compared to other more traditional dishware, she brought an original voice to an industry that could easily become repetitive and dull.  Guided mostly by intuition and unshakable confidence in her own artistic eye, she amassed a loyal following of collectors throughout her career and is still managing to charm fans today.

This creamer is similar to two other patterns that Clarice designed for Royal Staffordshire - Dimity and Devonshire - both which feature diminutive floral bouquets set against swirled dish shapes. That similarity makes all three patterns fun to mix and match, creating unique tablescapes that Clarice would wholeheartedly approve of.
