{HISTORY}

Vintage canning jar collectors are a fun crowd. They are the ones that notice and appreciate small details and find themselves giddy over little differences that others may not even notice. They get excited about the differences between a Mason jar and a Ball jar, know the difference between a screw cap and bail wire, and can recite the history of Atlas Glass like it was a long-lost ancestor.

Not every glass jar was made exactly the same or beloved over time in the same way. There were hundreds of different companies producing their own versions of glass canning jars in the early 1900s, but one that stands out from the rest consistently is the Ball jar. Started by the five Ball Brothers in the late 1800s, Ball jars came in all sorts of sizes from canning style to screw tops, and were made up until 1996, when the Ball Company left the glassware industry altogether to focus on metal food and beverage containers.

Between 1915 and 1962, Ball made their Ideal line of jars which featured a bail wire hinge closure with a glass lightning-style lid. The eight jars featured here were all made between 1923-1962. You'll notice the differences between each in the underscore of the logo (four have them and four do not) as well as additional numbers and jar information that varies between each one.

Each jar is sold individually so please make sure you are selecting the correct one you desire in the drop-down menu when you add a jar to your cart. Descriptions and availability of each jar are as follows...

  • Ball Ideal with no underscore (1-quart size) circa 1923-1933 (2 available). Please note one jar contains air bubbles in the glass and two tiny chips in the "a" and "l" letters of the word Ball. The other jar contains overall light oxidization (giving it the appearence of a hazy glow) and also contains one 1.5" inch scratch on the front (please see photos).
  • Ball Ideal with an underscore (1-quart size) circa 1933-1962 (4 available) Please note one jar contains square shoulders and says Made in the U.S.A. on the front
  • Ball Ideal with no underscore (Pint Size) circa 1923-1933 (2 available)

Raised lettering on each jar adds authentic style straight from early to mid-20th-century kitchen life and the removable glass lids and working clasps offer lots of potential for modern-day decorating and storage opportunities.

Whether you are an enthusiastic collector of vintage glassware, or simply a lover of interesting storage containers, Ball jars offer the best of both worlds - historic nostalgia and functional charm.
