{HISTORY}

Before he became Georges he was known as Jascha, and before he was known as Jascha he was Jakub. Born in 1937 in Ukraine, Jakub Brojdo, later known as George Briard, became one of the most famous midcentury American designers in the kitchenware industry.  Known for his elegant and whimsical designs that graced everything from trays to pots and pans to kitchen linens and glassware, Jakub adopted the name Georges in the 1940s via an art school friend that he worked with in New York. Signing most of his pieces with his new French-sounding name - Georges Briard - led to an impressive building of a brand that was very popular in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and still remains highly collectible today. 

This vintage George Briard hand towel, made in the 1950s,  features a block print of a poodle going about his morning shave framed by flowers and a crown. Although originally intended for use as a guest towel (once part of a his and hers set), here in the Vintage Kitchen we love this one best on the bar cart. The whimsical imagery and royal crown setting lend a sense of regal charm to the happy hour aesthetic and the size of this linen makes it a helpful companion when it comes to drink prep, service, and display. We think Georges would find this a fitting place too since he designed so many interesting glassware pieces meant specifically for cocktail use.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. The fabric is very soft and clean. It contains no holes, spots, stains or pulled threads. There is some mild fading on the block print as often occurs with this pattern.
