The Sharon pattern... an exquisite flower design of roses, violets, iris and forget-me-nots in deep colors on ivory background. Each piece delicately trimmed with  gold edging..." (Pattern description from a 1949 advertisement)

{HISTORY}

Made by Syracuse China in Syracuse, New York these two berry bowls feature the Sharon pattern in the Winchester shape which debuted between 1927-1928.  Designed by English-American pottery artist, Bertram Watkin (his first assignment after moving to the US) these dishes were part of an innovative and exciting new series for Syracuse called Old Ivory.

A change from the bright white dishware bodies that Syracuse had been producing in the past. Old Ivory featured a creamy bone-colored body that was warm and inviting. Combined with colorful patterns elegant enough for both household and hotel use, this Old Ivory dish series was designed with special attention paid to harmonious dining. Whether these dishes sat empty on a kitchen shelf or were piled high with food on the table, Old Ivory endeavored to make all types of food as aesthetically appealing (and appetizing!) as possible from the start of a meal to the very last bite.

Popular right from the beginning, the Sharon pattern, the Winchester shape and the Old Ivory hue were a trifecta of beauty and became one of Syracuse's most successful dish designs in the early to mid-20th century. Remaining in continual manufacture up until 1950, it is uncertain if these two berry bowls were used in a hotel setting or a household, but their bright rainbow-colored palette offers many tablescape opportunities with other mix and match dishes.
