Then we had the irises, rising beautiful and cool on their tall stalks, like blown glass, like pastel water, momentarily frozen in a splash... Margaret Atwood

{HISTORY}

Even though they were only in business for 20 years from 1934-1954, Universal Cambridge Pottery was able to make quite a patch of highly functional yet also very pretty dishware. This Iris pattern is a great example. It was made during the 1940's and was comprised of a whole host of accessories within the pattern line. From covered fridge dishes to cake plates, mixing bowls to salt and pepper shakers, butter dishes to gravy boats and all the serving dishes in between, the Iris pattern got all the kitchen jobs done! As part of the company's Camwood Ivory style, many of these pieces were oven-proof as well.

Which brings us to our pitcher (also oven proof!) featuring swags of stately irises in all their billowy beauty. A now hard-to-find 32 oz rarity, this pitcher, in keeping with its original functional contributions, is an ideal kitchen piece for both decorative and functional needs whether you are filling out your pattern or adding to your mix and match collection. It's large enough to accommodate a batch of wooden spoons and utensils for stylish counter-top storage, but its also small enough for petite tabletop purposes like serving water or juice to your friends and family. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we also like to use old pitchers as flower vases, flatware holders and watering cans too. So as you can see, pitcher purposes abound!
