Vintage 1940s Celadon Green Pottery Vase by Gonder - Imperial Series #537
The pieces in the Chinese line being introduced are authentic reproductions of the finest museum type and this is the first time this type of work has been accomplished by an American manufacturer. The celadons, ming yellow and ming blue glazing treatments used on these Chese pieces are the results of many years research and development." (From the Gonder sales catalog circa 1940s)
{HISTORY}
In the prettiest shade of celadon green with a light pink interior, this vintage 1940s-era pottery vase planter was made by Gonder Ceramic Arts in Zanesville, Ohio. Part of their Imperial series, it was officially called the Chinese Square Vase with Handles, a design inspired by museum pieces of the Chinese Imperial age.
With intentional brown painted aging marks, known as crackle glaze, on two corners and around some areas on the base, this planter is so timeless in shape, color and symmetry. Statuesque in size but petite in overall composition, this pottery vase would look just as equally beautiful holding a bouquet of flowers as it would an air plant, a topiary, or mini succulents thus offering many possibilities in the garden department.
Founded by Lawton Gonder in 1941, a lifetime veteran of the pottery industry. Gonder was known for creating interesting, high-quality pieces that included not only pottery but also lamp bases (under the name Elgee), tiles, and a limited run of luncheon dishes accompanied by small casseroles. The studio also perfected several glazing techniques that added an artistic aesthetic to overall pieces. Gonder operated until 1957 when the company was sold to a fellow ceramics industry maker.
This vase is from mold #537 - a now hard-to-find piece from the early Gonder catalog.
