There is not a thing that is more positive than bread. Fyodor Dostoevsky

{HISTORY}

Oh for the love of bread! Ever since the first loaf was ever baked, bread lovers have been trying to devise ways to keep this bundle of grains fresh for longer than a day. Bread boxes came into the equation naturally centuries ago and depending on the designer, evolved over time to include all sorts of bells and whistles in order to improve the preservation process.

Top vents, side vents, drawer vents, no vents. Crumb catchers, knife holders, cutting boards, handles.  Clasps, knobs,  latches, screens. Plain designs, fancy designs, roll-top designs. Over the course of the past three hundred years, bread boxes came in a plethora of shapes, sizes, aesthetics, and materials. Wood, porcelain, pottery, enamelware, wicker, metal, plastic, steel. If you could dare to dream it, it could possibly be just the thing you needed for your bread. The sky was the limit.

This bread box was made in the 1930s and features a cheerful yellow and green palette and a decorative embossed lid. Simple in design, it contains nothing more than a roomy interior and simple clasp. It was not the fancy version that Stanley Walter Krebs invented in 1918 with his built-in cutting board and knife holder. There was no removable drawer for crumbs in this model either. It was simply and beautifully a bread box meant for a humble task.... to house a loaf or two in order to prolong the shelf-life. In performing that job, it also helped keep the kitchen tidy and critter-free from any creature, big or small, who might be interested in a chew or two.

Today, there are just about a zillion different ways you could incorporate this cheerful box into your space. See below for style ideas.
