I have an appointment with spring. She goes to the window to wake me... Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

{HISTORY}

He needs no introduction, this man, this writer, who shaped the woods and the pond and the way we walk between them.

In 1960, Peter Pauper Press printed Henry David Thoreau's musings on the spiritual and philosophical nature of nature. In this slim chapbook that details Henry's thoughts on the courageous, aspirational, and contemplative moments that shape our hours and our mindset, there are meanderings on the birds and the trees, the setting sun, the rising moon, the fog that settles, the fox that hunts.

Reading Thoreau is always a thoughtful process and a creative exercise all rolled into one. We especially love the way his words invite new associations between physical presence and dreamy, free-style metaphors and associations. A water-filled well is a crystal mindset. Grass is perpetual youth. A stone is a cuddly pillow.  November is twilight. You can read and reread Henry year after year, decade after decade, and still find new insights and new interests.

Peter Pauper Press had a way with celebrating authors and their words in the same way. Publishing their first book in Westchester County, NY, in 1928, they strived to produce interesting books for affordable prices. This simple and humble mission resulted in a gorgeous career that's lasted almost a century and built a reputation for books that boasted stylized graphic design, high-quality paper, and engaging content.

This edition of Thoreau on Man and Nature was published in 1960. It remains timeless in both presentation and content.
