{HISTORY}

When it came to 20th-century cooking, there were two Martha Meades that left a lasting impresssion. The first Martha was a popular spokesperson for Sperry Flour during the first half of the 20th century. That Martha lived on the West Coast and was akin to Betty Crocker in the information that she shared via print ads and radio shows about preparing meals and planning parties that were popular with the home cooking crowd.

The second Martha was Martha L. Meade, a Virginian by birth and by heart who wrote a well-regarded cookbook in the early 1960s full of traditional Southern cuisine. Unlike West Coast Martha Meade, Southern Martha L. Meade worked for the federal government and collected recipes on the side as a way to soothe her homesickness for the Southern cooking she knew and loved.

Published in 1961, the year Martha L. turned 70, Recipes from the Old South features the best of classic, traditional Southern fare. In addition to well-known regional staples like biscuits, barbecue and fried chicken, Martha's recipe collection includes some famous historical ones, some that were longtime family secrets, and some that were her own adaptation.

Interesting recipes include Crackling Corn Bread, Gumbo File, Peanut Soup, Beaten Biscuits, Stuffed Roast Beef, Fried Country Ham with Red Gravy, Buckingham Eggs, Deviled Oysters on the Half Shell, Baked Bananas. Orange Soup, Eggplant High Hat, Baked Cucumbers, Lulu Paste, Tipsy Cake, Pumpkin Jam, Persimmon Pudding, Buck and Breck, Dandelion Wine and a handful of eggnog recipes.

From what we can gather, this cookbook seems to be the only one Martha L. Meade ever published. But when it comes to sharing recipes based on long-held family favorites, culinary nostalgia and regional food traditions, Martha packed it all in here, so perhaps that's all she needed to contribute on the matter - a one-hit wonder that turned out many a wonderful meal.
