A thrilling story which holds the reader's interest from the first page right through the last chapter.  Daily Democrat Book Review, November 1938

{HISTORY}

First published in 1938, Rebecca was Daphne Du Maurier's most well-known book.  An immediate bestseller, it won the National Book Award for Favorite Novel of 1938 as well as a host of accolades from book critics and reviewers around the country.

Capturing readers' attention across multiple genres including romance, suspense, brit lit, and gothic fiction. It's the story of a young bride who marries an affluent widower and takes up residence at his expansive estate in the English countryside only to be surrounded by the haunting memories of his mysterious first wife, Rebecca. There's the menacing housekeeper, the strange man that lives in the cottage on the estate, the suffocating pedestal-singing praises of Rebecca and her tragic death. And there's the descriptions of Manderley - the English estate, the Monte Carlo meet cute, and the lovely French Riviera honeymoon that introduces the story.  We won't share any more so as not to give away the plot completely only to say there are some unexpected twists and turns in the story that you might never see coming. A page-turner from the very beginning.

Since its debut,  Rebecca has never been out of print, making it especially fun for collectors, as there is a wide variety of cover art adorning various editions. This edition was published in 1943 for Random House's Modern Library Series.  It contains its original dust jacket designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954), a well-known American artist who illustrated many book covers for the Modern Library series.

Also included in this volume is a series of catalog notations and a library pocket, as it was donated to the Hartford Public Library (Hartford, CT) in 1975.  There it was held in circulation through the 1980s.

A wonderful suspenseful novel to dive into during the haunting month of October, this book will stay with you long after you finish. And for movie fans, there are two versions that you'll want to watch after you read the book - Alfred Hitchcock's 1940 classic starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine and the recent 2020 release starring Lily James and Kristen Scott Thomas.
