{HISTORY}

Debuting in 1959, My Favorite Recipes by the Culinary Arts Institute was a collection of recipes submitted by readers through the Sears Book Club. A shortened volume of The American People's Cookbook published in 1956, it contains over 300 pages of recipes that cover breakfast through dinner and dessert including snacks and the aforementioned appetizer.

Dependable and collaborative, the Culinary Arts Institute, based in Chicago published a large majority of cooking books, guides, pamphlets, and recipe booklets throughout the 20th century. Most famously headed up by Ruth Berolzheimer, the CAI (not to be confused with the cooking school known as the CIA), was keen on making cookbooks as attractive and informative as possible. Utilizing black and white photography, color photography, and whimsical illustrations, their literature, no matter how big or small always contained an air of excitement when it came to discussing food and recipes.

This cookbook continues with that dynamic presentation featuring fabulous illustrations by Kay Lovelace, a well-known 20th-century artist. Her cute and whimsical illustrations appear on almost every page tucked in between recipes submitted by home cooks from around the country.

Containing a vast array of recipes that hail from all different regions of the U.S., there are prize winners, family favorites, and tried and true dishes all featuring whole ingredients and well-described techniques.

A true culinary tour of mid-century kitchens, interesting recipes include Lemon Cloud Pie, Spud n'Cheese Puffs, Beets in Orange Sauce, Scalloped Sweet Potatoes, Sour Cream Kuchen, Coffee Braid, Raspberry Cream Pie, Tender-Rich Biscuits, Sweet-Sour Salmon Steaks, Irish Stew, Norwegian Meatballs, and Wine-Broiled Chicken.
