WRITTEN FOR THOSE WHO LOVE TO COOK...

{HISTORY}

Julia Child, nor her runaway classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, need no introduction to the culinary household. Along with two friends, Louisette and Simone (affectionately known as Simca) these ladies managed to singlehandedly change the way American home cooks approached French food in the 1960s. Reprinted dozens of times, MTAOFC has sold millions of copies since it was first published in 1961 becoming a beloved staple in kitchens around the world.

In 1970, Volume Two was published, a lengthy nine years after Volume One dazzled kitchens everywhere. This is a first edition of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume Two, and although it's missing its exterior dust jacket,  the original jacket flaps have been tucked inside the book for decades.

Containing seven chapters in which many of Julia and Simca's favorite french recipes are explained - French Bread, Brioche, Pate Brisee, Beef Wellington and a great array of desserts, the recipes are handled with the same careful explanation and attention to detail that made Volume One so successful.

Also just like Volume One,  this edition is illustrated throughout with drawings by Sidonie Coryn and Julia's husband, Paul Child. It also includes a holiday gift inscription to a "super chef" dated December 25th, 1970.

It's always fun when we run across a first edition of one of Julia's cookbooks here in New England. It makes us wonder if the original owner perhaps knew Julia or possibly met met her in person at some point and exchanged some pleasantries in her Massachusett's town.  Maybe they were devoted fans of her cooking show on public television or waited in line to catch a glimpse of her at a book signing. Whatever the situation was that led a gift giver to present this book to their favorite cook,  it's sheer joe-de-vivre that carries these recipes from cook to cook, kitchen to kitchen, time and time again.

- 555 pages

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. This cookbook was adored by its previous owner, who had an affinity for Julia's eggplant recipes as evidenced by the splatters and stains that fill those pages. The splatters don't affect the ability to read the text at all, and add definite character to a favorite chef's favorite cookbook. The exterior spine has tanned due to age. Cooking splatters appear on the foredge at bottom along with a a small streak of what looks to be fireplace ash. Other than that this book is in great shape. The spine is tight and all pages are intact. The original dust jacket flaps are included and the front endpaper contains a gift inscription written in pen to the original owner.

{SIZE}

Measures 10.25" inches (length) x 7.25" inches (width) x 1.5" inches (thickness) and weighs just a smidge under 3lbs.
