Edward W. Hobbs had quite a way with words. This book of practical directions and instructions is also tightly woven with a romantic's passionate love of the sea. The cover art and the fold-out diagrams are especially beautiful in this book. First published in 1938, it was reprinted twice before this edition came into being - once in 1948 and again in 1952. This is the 1952 edition which retains all of the 1938 content.  As it turns out, the original version was so meticulously and thoughtfully written and presented and readers found such great success following along and creating their own clipper ships, that Edward nor the publishers nor the readers saw any need in updating any of the information. The first try turned out to be the best! As Edward is the first to tell you in the opening preface..."I'm no seafaring man, but for close on thirty years  have known, made and loved models of ships of every kind." It is the knowledge of that passion, practice and patience accumulated over three decades that Edward shares in this beautiful book where art, legend and love meet on the high seas.

{CONDITION}

As you might expect from a book about the sea and the ships in it, this book bears some watermarks on the dust jacket and some areas of the fold-out diagrams, which adds to the overall charm of both the subject matter and the aesthetic of the book. All ages are clean and bright. There is foxing on the front and back endpapers and some rub marks to the interior coverboards. All the fold-out diagrams are firmly secured within the book.  The spine is tight and all pages are intact. Please see photos.
