Can one woman's interest turn into a lifetime career? You bet! Can it continue to inspire generations beyond after her own life has come and gone? Absolutely!

That's the story of Louise Evans Doole (1903-1966) who discovered a passion in the joy of growing herbs as a newly arrived twenty-something to the farmlands of Nebraska. A southerner by birth, Louise moved to Lincoln, Nebraska with her husband in the late 1920s and took up herb gardening which quickly became her area of expertise. In addition to being an editor at Nebraska Farmer, Louise also conducted local lectures on herb gardening and wrote two books on the subject and inspired thousands of home gardeners to try their hand at herb gardening.

 This book, Herbs: How to Grow and Use Them was Louise's first book. Published in 1962, it covered all aspects of herb gardening from growing to cultivation to cooking and preserving. Full of all sorts of invaluable information, this herb book is especially fun for its sections on garden layouts, culinary recipes and historical references.

Louise became such a knowledgeable figure in her Nebraska landscape, that an herb garden in Lincoln was completely devoted and dedicated to her memory, which visitors can still visit and learn from today. Louise states in the opening chapter that this book was intended for novice gardeners, but we disagree. Anyone who appreciates the beauty, flavor and cultivation of herbs will admire Louise's enthusiasm for her subject and the timeless advice she offers.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. All pages are clean and bright with the exception of page 16 which bears some dirt soiling (an appropriate stain for a gardening book!). The front and back cover also bear some light nad smudges and stains - most noticeably a brown mark on the front cover near the H in herbs. The spine is tight and all pages are intact.
