First published in 1948, Ghosts Along the Mississippi details the sobering role time has played in the architectural decay of over forty Louisiana plantations. Photographed between the years 1936-1941, acclaimed Southern photographer Clarence John Laughlin set out to capture the essence of each plantation, retelling their past histories and poetically describing their current conditions. A visually stunning view of the architecture of the Old South, most of which has now been lost to time or redevelopment, this is a fascinating look at buildings that have experienced the entire spectrum of architecture from once grand design to forlorn and crumbling rubble. 

This book will pull at the heart strings of any old house lover, photographer or historian not for its plantation setting which was both glorious and terrible, but for the integrity of the houses themselves - vestiges that tried to carry on through centuries.
